Designation System Support Engineer (40 Positions)
Job Description Will be handling Operation and maintanance of DG set.
(15KVA, 25KVA, 35KVA etc).
Will look after the Operation and maintanance of Power Plant & Battery
Backup.
Also responsible for Diesel Filling & Site Database Maintanance .

Desired Profile Candidate Description:

ITI/Diploma/Degree in Electrical with 1-5 years of hands on experience
in operation and maintenance of DG, Power Plant, Battery Backups.
OFC splicing experience. Diploma in Electrical is preferred.
Familiarity with different parts of Gujarat will be an added
advantage.

-        Must have working knowledge with some of the Networking protocol like PPP, L2TP, PPTP, IP/TCP/UDP, STP/RSTP, QBridge, DHCP, DNS, RIP/OSPF, 802.1x, Radius, SIP/MGCP, SSL/SSH, SNTP.

-         Should have worked on IP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, IGMP proxy, IGMP Snoop, Firewalls, NAT, Application Level gateways (ALG)

-         Must have worked in RTOS environment with operating systems like Linux, Nucleus or VxWorks.

            Specifying Architecting and Implementing embedded Systems based on RTOS.
Essential Requirements
-          Must be sound in C/C++, Data Structure, O/S and networking concepts.
           Experience of design, development and debugging over real time embedded systems.
        Preferable
-          Hands on experience of working with Linux networking stack for Kernel 2.6 and/or exposure to user Space Programming.
-          Worked on IPv6 implementation.

-         Complete system architecture of DSL based broadband access system network elements such as CPE, DSLAM or optical fiber based equipment like OLT, ONU.

Networker:

Work Experience Requirements

· A minimum of four years of technical support experience in
supporting products at the enterprise level with four (4) years or
more of network storage or backup applications technical support
experience or similar work experience in supporting network security
products.

· 2 years of Networker experience desirable.

· Strong working knowledge in the area of storage technologies
such as RAID, Fiber Channel, Tape Libraries and Backup Software.

· Strong troubleshooting skills with proven ability in trouble
shooting, resolution of the issues and debug data analysis. Preferably
with work experience in using network analyzers and trouble shooting.

· Architectural understanding of one or more operating systems
(NT, HPUX, Solaris, AIX, Linux, NetWare)

· Architectural understanding of one or more relational
databases (Oracle, SQL, Sybase, Informix, Lotus Notes)

· Ability to analyze and tune relational database and
operating system performance
· Strong Networking skills.

Best Practices for Configuring Group Policy Objects


In this article, I will share with you some best practices that you can use to keep your group policy objects well organized.

Although group policies are an extremely powerful security mechanism, it can be a bit tricky to deploy them in an effective manner. That's because the effective group policy is made up of multiple and sometimes contradictory group policy elements that are applied to the user object and / or to the computer that the user is working from. It is therefore critically important that you manage your group policy objects in a way that will allow you to keep them well organized so that you can always figure out which policy elements apply in a given situation.

Further complicating things is the fact that group policy objects can be combined with other group policy objects from the local computer or from a number of different locations within the Active Directory. If you want to make things really interesting though, you can even throw in some loopback or non inheritance settings to make things really confusing.

My point in telling you all of this is to illustrate that without the proper planning, your group policy structure can easily become huge and overly complicated. It is therefore critically important that you manage your group policy objects in a way that will allow you to keep them well organized so that you can always figure out which policy elements apply in a given situation. In this article, I will share with you some best practices that you can use to keep your group policy objects well organized.

Disable Unused Group Policy Elements

One of the first things that you should do to de-clutter your group policy is to disable any unused group policy elements. There are a couple of different ways that you can do this. I recommend starting out by looking at group policy objects as a whole to see if they are really necessary. In larger organizations, it is not uncommon to need group policy objects at every level of the Active Directory, but smaller organizations can often get away with having all of their group policy settings take place at a single level within the Active Directory.

The level within the Active Directory where it makes the most sense to enforce your group policy settings depends heavily on the way that the individual organization is set up. The procedure for disabling a group policy object is almost identical regardless of which level you are doing it at. For example, suppose that you wanted to disable a site level group policy object. To do so, you would open the Active Directory Sites and Services console. Next, you would right click on the site that the policy is currently linked to and select the Properties command from the resulting shortcut menu. When you do, you will see the site's properties sheet. If you then select the properties sheet's Group Policy tab you will see a list of all of the group policy objects that are bound to that site, as shown in Figure A.

OK, for this example, I said that we were going to disable the site level group policy object that's shown in Figure A. If you look at the figure, you will notice that there is a Delete button that you could use to get rid of the policy completely. However, I recommend disabling a policy initially rather than deleting it. The reason is because, if you were to delete a group policy object and then found out that something didn't work quite right afterwards, then it might be tricky to figure out which setting caused the problem and to fix the problem. However, if you simply disable the group policy object rather than deleting it, you can always re-enable the policy should something go wrong. Of course if everything appears to work correctly after you disable the policy, you could always delete the policy once it has been disabled for a week or so.

You might notice in Figure A that there is no disable button. If you want to disable a group policy, then you will have to select the policy that you want to disable and then click the Options button. When you do, you will see the Options dialog box that's shown in Figure B. Now all you have to do is to select the Disabled check box and click OK.

So far I have shown you how to disable an entire group policy object, but what you might not realize is that you can also disable part of a group policy object. Let's pretend that our site level group policy shown in Figure A contains some important settings at the user level, but that it doesn't have any computer level settings configured. That being the case, we can (and should) disable the computer settings within the policy.

Technically speaking if none of the computer level settings in the policy are configured, then it isn't hurting anything if we leave the computer level portion of the policy enabled. However, it will increase efficiency if you go ahead and disable the computer level portion of the policy. Think about what happens when a user logs on to a domain. Windows combines all of the group policy objects that apply to the user and to the computer that the user is working from and uses these group policy objects to create the effective policy. The more group policy objects that are in effect, the longer the login process will take. If however, you disable unused portions of your group policy objects, you can speed up the login process for your users and reduce the workload on your domain controllers.

So let's pretend that we want to disable the computer level portion of the group policy object that's shown in Figure A. To do so, we would simply click the Properties button to access the properties sheet that's shown in Figure C. As you can see in the figure, the properties sheet contains two check boxes that you can use to disable either the user or the computer portion of the policy. Therefore, you would select the Disable Computer Configuration Settings check box and click OK.

Override Settings

Now that I have talked about how to disable whole or partial policies, I want to discuss another best practice for group policy configuration. You might have noticed in Figure B that there was a check box labeled No Override. This is one option that I recommend using very sparingly.

As I have explained already, group policies are applied in a hierarchical fashion beginning at the local computer level then working up to the domain, site, and organizational unit levels. If a setting within a higher level policy contradicts a setting made in a lower level policy, then the higher level policy takes precedence. For example, suppose that a local computer level policy set the minimum password length to six characters and a domain level policy set the minimum password length to eight characters. Assuming that both policies were in effect, the required password length would be eight characters because the domain level policy is considered to be a higher level policy than the local policy.

What the No Override option does is prevents a higher level policy from changing anything that is set in the policy with the no override option set. The higher level policy can enforce new settings, but it can't change existing settings. For example, let's pretend that there are two policies in effect. A local computer policy sets a minimum password length of six characters and has the no override option set. A domain level policy sets the minimum password length to eight characters and sets the maximum password age to 30 days. The effective policy would mandate a six character password that expires every 30 days. The six character password remains in effect because the no override option is in effect. The 30 day expiration period is in effect because the lower level policy didn't specify an expiration period, so the higher level policy isn't overriding the lower level policy by setting an expiration period, it is merely adding to the policy.

Another group policy feature that you should use sparingly is the Block Inheritance feature. The basic idea here is that if you want to insure that a policy does not pick up settings from a lower level policy, then you can enable Block Inheritance.

In most cases, I would recommend never using the No Override or Block Inheritance features. They do have their place though. Although I have personally never tried it, I have heard other administrators talk about using No Override and Block Inheritance to help prevent group policies from interfering with the system policies used by older Windows operating systems.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the things that you can do to help make sure that your group policies stay organized and run as efficiently as possible. If there is enough interest, I might possibly write a follow up article discussing some more best practices.

10 Reasons why PCs crash


Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says.
"Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart
your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in
all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses
Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More
importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each
hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt
request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each
device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The
keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each
device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly,
two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user
tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The
way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the
following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its
description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device
Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your
computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using
it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ
holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix
this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to
make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com.
If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by
moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about
opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the
mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any
static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making.
It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the
IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are
16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to
increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of
death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error
indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is
damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of
chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will
usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed.
This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase
the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way
to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips
on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the
circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to
touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either
parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two
types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be
connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often
linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that
are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is
to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a
boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to
write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the
screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes
more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram.
Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam
has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to
lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If
possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow
Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for
Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to
become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the
hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen
freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the
hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a
good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using
the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom
right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be
solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted
by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-
Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some
housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space
on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary
Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free
a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives
should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night
when the computer is not in use.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video
card problems.

These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the
video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at
the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops,
high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due
to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go
to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing
your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press
properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window.
Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be
careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you
make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic
Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for
a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As
ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is
old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a
computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card's manufacturer on the internet and search for
the most recent drivers for it.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses
erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start.
This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires
constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be
able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file.
DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus
software manufacturer.

An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network
Associates ( www.nai.com). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by
Symantec ( www.symantec.com).

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often
called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can
be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable
amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's
performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not
be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not
recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to
clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up
from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the
printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed
software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software
and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to
remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove
references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way
clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete
software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni
Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It
works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition),
Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent
damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to
reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from
www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This
can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting
Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix
problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS
settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup)
during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and
disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2)
cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former
settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep
them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to
overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel
error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to
operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the
CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com
or www.coolit.com

CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in
the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should
also be more stable.

10 Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady
supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can
crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a
uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power
supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes
to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut
will cause any unsaved data to be lost

10 Fast and Free Security Enhancements


Before you spend a dime on security, there are many precautions you
can take that will protect you against the most common threats.

1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly (http://
office.microsoft.com/productupdates) ; have your Office CD ready.
Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click
on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose
the appropriate options.

2. Install a personal firewall. Both SyGate (_www.sygate.com) and
ZoneAlarm (_www.zonelabs.com) offer free versions.


3. Install a free spyware blocker. Our Editors' Choice ("Spyware,"
April 22) was SpyBot Search & Destroy (_http://security.kolla.de).
SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.

4. Block pop-up spam messages in Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling
the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant
messaging program). Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools |
Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties.
Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam
pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.

5. Use strong passwords and change them periodically. Passwords should
have at least seven characters; use letters and numbers and have at
least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izKro@l. This will make
it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.

6. If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version
or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and
current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities.

7. Buy antivirus software and keep it up to date. If you're not
willing to pay, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition (Grisoft Inc.,
w*w.grisoft.com). And doublecheck your AV with the free, online-only
scanners available at w*w.pandasoftware.com/activescan and _http://
housecall.trendmicro.com.

8. If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features: Use
MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the
biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or

9. Join a respectable e-mail security list, such as the one found at
our own Security Supersite at _http://security.ziffdavis.com, so that
you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper
precautions.

10. Be skeptical of things on the Internet. Don't assume that e-mail
"From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you
have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an
attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to
anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."

This hack will only work if the person that owns the machine has no
intelligence. This is how it works: When you or anyone installs
Windows XP for the first time your asked to put in your username and
up to five others. Now, unknownst to a lot of other people this is the
only place in
Windows XP that you can password the default Administrator Diagnostic
Account. This means that to by pass most administrators accounts on
Windows XP all you have to do is boot to safe mode by pressing F8
during boot up and choosing it. Log into the Administrator Account and
create your own or change the password on the current Account. This
only works if the user on setup specified a password for the
Administrator Account.

This has worked for me on both Windows XP Home and Pro.

Now this one seems to be machine dependant, it works randomly(don't
know why)

If you log into a limited account on your target machine and open up a
dos prompt then enter this set of commands Exactly: (this appeared on
www.astalavista.com a few days ago but i found that it wouldn't work

Now what you have just done is told the computer to backup the command
program and the screen saver file, then edits the settings so when the
machine boots the screen saver you will get an unprotected dos prompt
with out logging into XP. Once this happens if you enter this command
minus the quotes "net user password" If the Administrator Account is
called Frank and you want the password blah enter this "net user Frank
blah" and this changes the password on franks machine to blah and your
in.

I am facing one problem in Lotus Domino Web Access, It is like
bellow..

Even if having iNotes6.ntf Template, while accessing mails through
DWA, the display is not ok and shows like mail6.ntf template..

I have done so many things on Database side, but the problem is not
from database side and something else..

Can any one help me out in this case....??

Even the full version will be detected by Antivirus / Antyspam software.  The only way to avoid this is to exclude the key logger file in your Antivirus / Antyspam software configuration.

An Alternate way is that you can Exclude that software Exe from
detecting as virus if you got access rights for your Anti virus
Server.

I guess full version will also get detected as spy ware only.

Important configuration issue: You must overwrite the proxy server password in the configuration wizard

If you are using a proxy server that requires user name/password authentication, the WSUS server may fail to synchronize updates if you do not overwrite the proxy server password when running the WSUS Server Configuration Wizard. Because the configuration wizard is launched automatically at the end of setup, this problem can cause synchronization errors after you upgrade to WSUS 3.0 from an older version of WSUS.

You can avoid this problem by cancelling the configuration wizard after upgrade, or by re-entering the correct proxy password when the configuration wizard runs. To recover from this problem after it has occurred, go to Update Source and Proxy Server on the Options page, re-enter the proxy password, and then save the setting.

System requirements for WSUS 3.0 server installation

WSUS 3.0 server is supported on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008

The WSUS 3.0 server is supported on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008.

Windows 2000 Server is not supported for WSUS 3.0 servers

Microsoft Windows(R) 2000 Server is not a supported operating system for WSUS 3.0 servers.

WSUS 3.0 is not supported on servers running Terminal Services

Although WSUS 3.0 may still run on servers running Terminal Services, doing so is not supported or recommended. WSUS 3.0 will not run on a server running Terminal Services in configurations using remote SQL Server implementations. Because all remote custom actions (including installation) on a Terminal Server license server will be run as the system account, and the server's system account may not have permissions on the remote SQL Server, the installation may fail.

Configuration requirements for WSUS 3.0 server installation

IIS must be installed

Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0 requires Internet Information Services (IIS), which is not installed by default on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. If you attempt to install WSUS 3.0 without IIS, Windows Server Update Services Setup displays an error message saying that IIS is not installed

If IIS is running in IIS 5.0 isolation mode, installation will fail

If you have upgraded the server from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003, IIS may be running in IIS 5.0 compatibility mode. It is also possible to enable IIS 5.0 isolation mode in IIS Manager. This will cause installation to fail. You will need to disable IIS 5.0 isolation mode before installing WSUS 3.0.

If any IIS component is installed in 32-bit compatibility mode on a 64-bit platform, the WSUS 3.0 installation may fail

All IIS components should be installed in native mode on 64-bit platforms. The installation may fail if any IIS component is in 32-bit compatibility mode.

Proxy servers must support both HTTP and HTTPS

When you configure the root WSUS server (the WSUS server that gets updates directly from Microsoft Update), and there will be a proxy server between the WSUS server and the Internet, the proxy server must support both HTTP and HTTPS.

If two or more Web sites are already running on port 80, delete all but one of them before installing WSUS

If you have two or more Web sites running on port 80 (for example Windows(R) SharePoint(R) Services), you should delete all but one of them before installing WSUS. If you do not do this, your server's clients may fail to self-update.

When installing WSUS 3.0, you may need to disable antivirus programs

When you install WSUS 3.0, you may need to disable antivirus programs before you can successfully perform the installation. After you disable the antivirus program, restart the computer before you start installing WSUS. Restarting the computer prevents files from being locked when the installation process needs to access them. After the installation is complete, be sure to re-enable your antivirus program. Visit your antivirus program vendor's Web site for the exact steps to disable and re-enable your antivirus program and version.


Caution:

This workaround may make your computer or your network more vulnerable to attack by malicious users or by malicious software such as viruses. We do not recommend this workaround, but are providing this information so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.


Note:

An antivirus program is designed to help protect your computer from viruses. You must not download or open files from sources that you do not trust, visit Web sites that you do not trust, or open e-mail attachments when your antivirus program is disabled.

WSUS 3.0 requires the nested triggers option to be turned on in SQL Server

The nested triggers option is turned on by default; however, it can be turned off by a SQL Server administrator.

If you plan to use a SQL Server database as the Windows Server Update Services data store, the SQL Server administrator should verify that the nested triggers option on the server is turned on before the WSUS 3.0 administrator installs WSUS 3.0 and specifies the database during setup.

WSUS 3.0 Setup turns on the RECURSIVE_TRIGGERS option, which is a database-specific option; however, it does not turn on the nested triggers option, which is a server global option.

To see if the nested triggers option is on, use the following:

sp_configure 'nested triggers'

To turn on the nested triggers option in SQL Server, run the following from a batch file on the computer running SQL Server:

sp_configure 'nested triggers', 1

If you do not have SQL Server Management Studio on your server, you may want to run SQL scripts from the command line. You can obtain the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Command Line Query Utility from Microsoft Download Center [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70728] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70728). To get started, run sqlcmd.

If you wish to run SQL scripts against Windows Internal Database, you must also download the SQL Native Client from the same download page.

Remote SQL limitations and requirements

WSUS 3.0 offers support for running database software on a computer separate from the computer with the rest of the WSUS 3.0 application. There are some requirements for configuring a remote SQL installation

*

You cannot use a server configured as a domain controller for the back end of the remote SQL pair.

*

You must not be running Terminal Server on the computer that will be the front-end server of a remote SQL installation.

*

You must use at least Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (available on the Microsoft Download Center [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66143] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66143) for database software on the back-end computer if that computer is running Windows Server 2003, and SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 if it is running Windows Server(R) 2008.

Both the front-end and the back-end computers must be joined to an Active Directory domain, otherwise, if they are in different domains, you must establish cross-domain trust between the domains before running WSUS setup.

*

If you already have WSUS 2.0 installed in a remote SQL configuration and wish to upgrade to WSUS 3.0, you should uninstall WSUS 2.0 (using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel) on the back-end computer while ensuring that the existing database remains intact. Then you should install SQL Server 2005 SP1 or SP2 and upgrade the existing database. Finally, you should install WSUS 3.0 on the front-end computer.

WSUS cannot be installed when certain pre-release versions of Internet Explorer 7 plus Terminal Services are already installed

WSUS setup will fail when certain release candidates of Internet Explorer 7 are present along with Terminal Services.

System requirements for WSUS 3.0 remote console installation

The WSUS 3.0 remote console can be installed on the following platforms:

Configuration requirements for WSUS 3.0 remote consoles

You should use a broad-band connection between a remote administration console and a WSUS 3.0 server

You may experience performance problems if you connect to the WSUS 3.0 server with a remote administration console over a narrow-band WAN connection. You can limit the number of updates and computers you see by filtering update and computer views, but it is recommended that you use a broad-band connection between the remote administration console and WSUS 3.0 servers. If you have performance problems with the remote console, we recommend connecting to the server using Terminal Server for remote management.

System requirements for client installation

Automatic Updates is the WSUS client software. It can be used with WSUS on any of the following operating systems:

Windows Vista

Windows Server 2008

*

Microsoft Windows Server 2003, any edition

*

Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2

*

Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP4, Windows 2000 Server SP4, or Windows 2000 Advanced Server with SP4

Software requirements for WSUS 3.0 server installation

The following table shows required software for Windows Server 2003 SP1 platforms. Required software for Windows Server 2008 will be addressed in the section that deals with WSUS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008.

Make sure the WSUS 3.0 server meets this list of requirements before you run WSUS 3.0 setup. If any of these updates require restarting the computer when installation is completed, you should perform the restart before installing WSUS 3.0.

SQL Server 2005 (optional)

WSUS 3.0 will install Windows Internal Database for you if a compatible version of SQL Server is not installed already. If you plan to use a full SQL Server database, you must use (at a minimum) SQL Server 2005 SP1 (available on the Microsoft Download Center [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66143] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=66143) on Windows Server 2003, or SQL Server 2005 SP2 (available on the Microsoft Download Center [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=84823] at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=84823) for on Windows Server 2008.


Note:

If WSUS 2.0 has been installed previously and it is using SQL Server 2000, SQL Server Desktop Engine 2000, or any SQL Server database earlier than SQL Server 2005 SP1 (or SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows Server 2008), the WSUS 3.0 installation program will install Windows(R) Internal Database and migrate the database to it.

Minimum disk-space requirements for WSUS 3.0 server installation

The following are the minimum disk-space requirements to install Windows Server Update Services:

1 GB on the system partition

2 GB for the volume on which database files will be stored

20 GB for the volume on which content is stored


Important:

WSUS 3.0 cannot be installed on compressed drives. Please check that the drive you choose is not compressed.

WSUS 3.0 upgrade requirements

Make sure that your WSUS installation is running correctly, and back up the WSUS database before upgrading

If you are upgrading to WSUS 3.0 from a previous version, make sure that your current installation is running correctly, and back up the WSUS database before upgrading.

Check for recent errors in the event logs, problems with synchronization between downstream servers and upstream servers, or problems with clients not reporting. Make sure that these issues have been resolved before continuing.

2.

You may want to run DBCC CHECKDB to ensure that the WSUS database is correctly indexed. For more information about CHECKDB, see DBCC CHECKDB [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86948] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=86948).

Back up the WSUS database.

Software Update Services 1.0 should be uninstalled

The installation of WSUS 3.0 will fail if Software Update Services 1.0 is installed on the same machine. You should uninstall Software Update Services 1.0 before installing WSUS 3.0.

Upgrading from a beta version of WSUS 3.0 to the RTM version of WSUS 3.0 is not supported, but upgrading from the RC version to the RTM version is allowed

If you have a beta version of WSUS 3.0 already installed, you will need to uninstall it and delete the database before installing the RTM version of WSUS 3.0. It is possible to upgrade only from the RC version to the RTM version.

It is not possible to upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 on a 64-bit operating system

WSUS 2.0 is not supported on 64-bit operating systems. It is not possible to upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 on 64-bit systems.

Setup command-line parameters

You can perform unattended installations of WSUS 3.0 using the WSUS command-line parameters. This table shows the command-line parameters for WSUS 3.0.

Important:

If you install WSUS 3.0 in quiet mode (/q), and the machine does not have all the prerequisites installed, the installation will generate a file named WSUSPreReqCheck.xml and save it in the %TEMP% directory.

Setup issues

IIS will be restarted during WSUS 3.0 Setup

WSUS 3.0 Setup will restart IIS without notification, which could affect existing Web sites within your organization. If IIS is not running, WSUS 3.0 setup will start it.

If connections are open to an existing WSUS database, the installation may fail

If you are upgrading to WSUS 3.0 from an existing installation and connections are still open to the existing WSUS database (for example, if SQL Server Management Studio is open), the installation may fail. Please close all connections and reinstall WSUS 3.0.

WSUS setup shows the wrong directory for database files

In WSUS setup, the Ready to Install screen reports incorrectly that the database location is the parent directory of the database location. For example, the default location is %systemdrive%\WSUS\UpdateServicesDbFiles, but this location appears incorrectly as %systemdrive%\WSUS.

If WSUS is installed on a machine that has Multilingual User Interface language packs with a default language other than English, Help will be displayed in the default language rather than in English

If you have a machine that has Multilingual User Interface language packs with a default language other than English, you will still be able to install WSUS when the current user's locale is English. The UI will be displayed in English, but you must use a workaround to have Help display in English. Copy the English-language Help .chm file (WSUSInstallDir\documentation\mui\0409\WSUS30Help.chm) to the main documentation directory (WSUSInstallDir\documentation\WSUS30Help.chm). At this point Help should display correctly in all languages.

Upgrade issues

Upgrading from WSUS 3.0 RC to WSUS 3.0 RTM will cause the SSL certificate not to be assigned to the WSUS Web site

The WSUS Web site is deleted and recreated during upgrade from WSUS 3.0 RC to WSUS 3.0 RTM. As a consequence, the SSL certificate will no longer be assigned to the WSUS Web site. You will need to reassign the certificate after upgrade.

Recovering from a failed upgrade

If you are upgrading from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 and the upgrade fails for whatever reason, you will need to reinstall WSUS 2.0 and restore its database from the backup.

It is not possible to upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 if there is a WSUS 3.0 database from a previous installation

If you have previously installed WSUS 3.0 and then reinstalled WSUS 2.0, you must delete the WSUS 3.0 database on the machine before attempting to reinstall WSUS 3.0.

Changing the computer name prior to upgrading to WSUS 3.0 can cause the upgrade to fail

If you change the computer name after installing WSUS 2.0 and before you upgrade to WSUS 3.0, the upgrade can fail.

Use the following script to remove and re-add the ASPNET and WSUS Administrators groups. Then run the upgrade again.

You will need to replace <DBLocation> with the folder where the database is installed, and <ContentDirectory> with the local storage folder.

Setup can overwrite a previous database backup

WSUS 3.0 setup will add the database to the directory specified during setup. By default, this is %systemdrive%\WSUS\UpdateServicesDbFiles. If there is a previous database backup in this directory, it will be overwritten by the new database. Administrators should back up database files before applying updates to the computer where the database is located.

If you have migrated from MSDE to SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005 on WSUS 2.0, you will need to change a registry value

If you have an installation of WSUS 2.0, and have migrated from SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005, you will need to change the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup\WmsdeInstalled value from 1 to 0. If you do not do so before upgrading to WSUS 3.0, the upgrade will fail.

If WSUS 2.0 setup is started and canceled, it will delete the WSUS registry key

If you launch WSUS 2.0 setup and then cancel it, the WSUS registry key will be deleted. This may cause problems if you have WSUS 3.0 already installed. The same problem will occur if you begin to uninstall WSUS 2.0 and then cancel the operation, then attempt to upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0.

If you uninstall WSUS 3.0 and leave the log files behind, they may not have the correct permissions after reinstall

When you uninstall WSUS 3.0, you have the option of keeping the installation's log files. When you reinstall WSUS 3.0, the old log files lose their permissions (usually for WSUS Administrators only). You should restore the permissions on these log files.

If Windows SharePoint Services was installed after WSUS 3.0 RC, upgrade to WSUS 3.0 RTM will succeed with a workaround

If you installed WSUS 3.0 RC, then installed Windows SharePoint Services on the same machine, you can upgrade to WSUS 3.0 RTM only by choosing to install on the custom port (port 8530). To perform this install from the command line, open a command shell, and then enter the command: WSUSSetup /q / g/ DEFAULT_WEBSITE=0. (To perform this install using the UI, type WSUSSetup /g DEFAULT_WEBSITE=0.)

If WSUS is installed on a machine with Multilingual User Interface language packs installed, Help will be displayed in the default language rather than the user's current language

If WSUS 2.0 clients have updates with Not Applicable status, the updates will appear as "Unknown" for a short time after upgrading to WSUS 3.0

If a WSUS 2.0 server has clients with Not Applicable updates, these updates will appear to have Unknown status for a short time after the server is upgraded to WSUS 3.0. The update status will return to Not Applicable after the next time the client does a scan.

Known Issues

Troubleshooting multiple download errors or repeated client synchronization failures

If WSUS 3.0 clients report multiple download errors or if clients fail to synchronize with the WSUS 3.0 server for an extended period of time, you may have a corrupted client download cache. To recover from this state, you can try deleting the client download cache from the file system.

To delete the client download cache:

1.

Delete all files and subdirectories in this location on the client computer: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download

2.

Attempt to install the update by synchronizing the client computer with WSUS 3.0 again. This installation attempt should fail with the following error: WU_E_DM_NOTDOWNLOADED, "The update has not been downloaded."

3.

After this failure, the client computer will automatically restart the download and the installation will be able to proceed.

If synchronization fails, retry synchronization

If synchronization fails, your first course of troubleshooting action should be to try to synchronize the server again. If subsequent synchronizations fail, use the troubleshooting information in the Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Operations Guide [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=81072] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=81072).

Changing the WSUS 3.0 configuration directly in the database is not supported

Windows Server Update Services stores its configuration data in a SQL Server database. However, changing the configuration data by accessing the database directly is not supported. Do not attempt to modify the WSUS 3.0 configuration by accessing the database directly. You should change the WSUS 3.0 configuration using the WSUS 3.0 console or calling WSUS 3.0 APIs.

Download failures are not reported quickly if disk quotas are turned on

If disk quotas are turned on and the quota is reached, update download failures on the WSUS server may not be reported in a timely manner. To avoid this issue, disable disk quotas or increase the quota.

If WSUS 3.0 is deployed using SSL, client computers may fail with a 0x8024400a error code

Client computers can sometimes fail with a "0x8024400a" error code when communicating with a WSUS 3.0 server using SSL. For an update that addresses this issue, see KB 905422 [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70593] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70593).

The WSUS Administrators domain account will not be deleted when WSUS is uninstalled

The WSUS Administrators group is created as a domain account (not a local account) on domain controllers, so all installations using this domain account would be disabled if the account were deleted when WSUS is uninstalled. Therefore, uninstalling WSUS will not delete the WSUS Administrators domain account.

If a downstream server is converted to an upstream server, catalog site updates must be reimported

When you promote a downstream server to be an upstream server, you must also r-import all catalog site updates. Otherwise the site will fail to synchronize new catalog site update revisions to this server.

If you are using IIS with SSL, unencrypted access is still possible unless "Require Secure Channel" is checked

If you set up IIS to use SSL by installing a certificate, it is still possible to access the site via unencrypted HTTP unless the option "Require Secure Channel" is checked. For more information, see Enabling Encryption [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70601] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70601).

Catalog site import may fail without read/write permissions to the %windir%\TEMP folder

When performing a catalog site import, if the Network Service account does not have read/write permission for the %windir%\TEMP folder, the import may fail with an error message such as the following: "Server was unable to process request. ---> Could not find file 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\tempFileName.dll'."

Performance may be slow when synchronizing between WSUS 3.0 and a downstream replica server running WSUS 2.0

If you install WSUS 3.0 on an upstream server and attempt to synchronize with a downstream replica server running WSUS 2.0, you may experience performance problems. To address this issue, see KB 910847 [http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70669] (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=70669).

If the mail server is down or unreachable, e-mail notification fails without notice

If the network's e-mail server is offline, WSUS 3.0 will silently fail to send e-mail notifications. However, it will write event 10052 (HealthCoreEmailNotificationRed) in the event log.

Changed settings on an upstream server are not pushed immediately to the downstream server

When the upstream server configuration is changed, it might take some time before these configuration changes actually become effective. For example, if you change a setting on the upstream server such as selecting a new language, and immediately trigger a synchronization on the downstream server, the change will not appear. Instead, it will be pushed to the downstream server on the next scheduled synchronization. The wait time increases depending on the number of updates present on the upstream server.

Uninstalling WSUS 3.0 does not uninstall the database instance

If WSUS 3.0 is uninstalled, the database instance will not be uninstalled. The instance may be shared by more than one application, and will cause other applications to fail if it is removed.

If it is necessary to uninstall Windows Internal Database, the following commands will uninstall the application:

(on 32-bit platforms)

msiexec /x {CEB5780F-1A70-44A9-850F-DE6C4F6AA8FB} callerid=ocsetup.exe

(on 64-bit platforms)

msiexec /x {BDD79957-5801-4A2D-B09E-852E7FA64D01} callerid=ocsetup.exe

If you wish to uninstall Windows Internal Database Service Pack 2 from Windows Server 2008, you may do so by means of Server Manager.

However, the removal of the application may not remove the default .mdf and .ldf files, which will cause a subsequent WSUS 3.0 installation to fail. These files can be deleted from the %windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE directory.

If a downstream server changes its upstream server, "Unknown" status updates are reported as "Not Applicable"

If a downstream server starts to synchronize from a different upstream server, updates that have a status of "Unknown" will be reported on the new upstream server as "Not Applicable". This state is temporary and will be corrected the next time the downstream server reports its status, after its clients have synchronized with it.

If a WSUS 3.0 replica server is managing more than one computer with the same name, reporting rollup will fail

If a WSUS 3.0 replica server is managing more than one computer with the same name, reporting rollup will fail. As a result, the reports available to the root WSUS server will be incomplete. This problem is resolved by deleting all but one of the duplicate computer entries on the replica server.

If the Server Cleanup Wizard times out on one server when run on multiple servers from a remote console, the connection to all servers will be lost

It is possible to run the Server Cleanup Wizard on multiple servers from a single remote console. However, if the cleanup process times out on one of the servers, the console will lose its connection to all the servers. No data will be lost, but the administrator will need to reset the remote connection to each of the servers.

The Server Cleanup Wizard deletes files after thirty days, not after three months

Some text in the Server Cleanup Wizard is inaccurate. It says: "Delete updates that are expired and haven't been approved for three months, and delete old revisions of updates that haven't been approved for three months." The correct amount of time is thirty days, not three months.

Starting and stopping the connection in quick succession causes "no failure" error message in the Configuration Wizard

When you configure WSUS, you are required to connect to the upstream server (either Microsoft Update or the intranet upstream server) in order to transfer basic information about the server. If you click Start Connecting and immediately click Stop Connecting, you will receive the incorrect error message "There was no synchronization failure."

WSUS clients using Windows Vista RTM are now able to search for updates on Microsoft Update

In previous versions of WSUS, clients using Windows Vista RTM were able to get updates only from the WSUS server. With WSUS 3.0 RTM, Vista clients can now get updates from Microsoft Updates also. You can direct Vista clients to Microsoft Update by bringing up Windows Update from the Control Panel and clicking the hyperlink Check online for updates from Microsoft Update Service. If the Group Policy option Remove access to all Windows Update features is enabled, Windows Update will not display the hyperlink.

WSUS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008

Issue 1: The IIS 7.0 configuration file must be updated before running WSUS 3.0

Before running WSUS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008, the IIS configuration file must be updated. You will need to take the following steps:

1. Open the IIS configuration file: %WINDIR%\system32\inetsrv\applicationhost.config

2. In the <System.webServer><modules> tag, remove <add name="CustomErrorMode"> if it exists.

3. In the <System.webServer><modules> tag, add <remove name="CustomErrorMode">.

The resulting tag should look like this:

Issue 2: If you want to install WSUS 3.0 on the custom port on Windows Server 2008 Beta 3, you must pre-create the Web site

If you intend to install WSUS 3.0 on Windows Server 2008 Beta 3, and you want to configure WSUS to use custom port 8530, you will need to create a Web site named "WSUS Administration" on port 8530 before launching the WSUS installation program.

WSUS 3.0 on Windows Small Business Server 2003

Issue 1: If the IIS virtual root is restricted to certain IP addresses or domain names, the WSUS 3.0 server will not be able to update itself

Some installations of Windows Small Business Server may have the default IIS Web site configured for "IP address and domain name restrictions." If so, the Windows Update Client on the server may not be able to update itself

Issue 2: Installing WSUS 3.0 on Small Business Server--Integration Issues

If Windows Small Business Server 2003 uses an ISA proxy server to access the Internet, the following must be typed in the Settings user interface: proxy server settings, proxy server name, and port.

*

If ISA is using Windows Authentication, proxy server credentials should be typed in the form "DOMAIN\user" and the user should be a member of the Internet Users group.

Issue 3: If you have added a subnet to your network without using the Windows SBS wizards, you must perform this procedure

The WSUS server setup process installs two IIS vroots on the server: SelfUpdate and ClientWebService. Setup also places some files under the home directory of the default Web site (on port 80) that enables client computers to self-update through the default Web site. By default, the default Web site is configured to deny access to any IP address other than localhost or to specific subnets attached to the server. As a result, client computers that are not on localhost or on those specific subnets cannot self-update. If you have added a subnet to your network without using the Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 (Windows SBS) wizards, you must perform this procedure.

In Server Management, expand Advanced Management, expand Internet Information Services, expand Web Sites, expand Default Web Site, right-click the Selfupdate virtual directory, and then click Properties.

Click Directory Security.

Under IP address and domain name restrictions, click Edit, and then click Granted Access.

Click OK, right-click the ClientWebService virtual directory, and then click Properties.
